Ylang ylang is both a tree (Cananga odorata) and its flower. Extracted by steam distillation, the sweet floral essential oil from the fragrant ylang-ylang flower is used extensively in soap making and aromatherapy.

Yin and Yang of Ylang Ylang

Let me start by saying it's nothing contradictory about ylang ylang. To clarify it's one of those aromas that you either love or hate. In aromatherapy, ylang-ylang is used for its stress-relieving, anti-anxiety, and mood elevating properties. Like jasmine and rose, the scent of ylang-ylang has long been considered an aphrodisiac, and ylang-ylang scented massage oil is believed by some to be an effective topical remedy for sexual dysfunction.
